The King of Syria was out to get Elisha. Every single one of his military strategies had miserably failed. He was sure that there were traitors among his people. Because, how else would the enemy ever know how to evade his tactics?
What the King of Syria didn’t know, was that God Himself was the Head of the Israelite army.
You see, every time the king of Syria planned an attack on the King of Israel, God would reveal the details to Elisha-the servant of God-, who would then reveal them to the King of Israel.
When the king of Syria finally came to the realization that there was no snitch among his people, but that it was actually God Himself who was revealing his strategies to Elisha, the king of Syria resolved in his heart to eliminate Elisha from the picture. – 2 Kings 6: 12-14
What the King of Syria forgot to consider, however; was the fact that Elisha was a mere instrument, that the God to whom he served could not be destroyed with a simple human army, and this God had Elisha’s back.
Genuinely believing that by getting rid of Elisha, he would get rid of his problems, the King of Syria took out the big guns and sent out a “great host” of horses and chariots at night to surround the city were the prophet Elisha and his servant were staying.
Just imagine how big that army was that they actually surrounded a whole city! Humanly speaking there was no way out! Elisha was trapped, and this was it! Or was it?
When the sun rose, and Elisha’s servant opened the window and saw the Syrian army surrounding the city, his heart fainted, and he cried out: “Alas, my master! How shall we do?- 2 Kings 6: 15. The fear that he experienced must have been very real.
Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation? Trapped by problems, sorrows, and struggles with no visible way out? Have you ever felt frustrated beyond belief or as afraid as Elisha’s servant?
It is precisely because we are humans and God knows that we experience these feelings sometimes, that the Bible is filled with promises. Promises that are there for you to claim as your own.
“The angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear him, and deliveres them”
-Psalm 34: 7
Then, Elisha replied to his servant: “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.” And Elisha prayed that the Lord would open the eyes of his servant so that he could see what was really going on. – 2 Kings 6:17
When the servant’s eyes were opened, he could see, that it was in fact more the ones on their side, than the ones on the enemies’ lines. Turns out, the Army of the Lord was surrounding the Syrian army, and they greatly surpassed them in numbers!- 2 Kings 6:17
Talk about keeping a promise!
How many times are our eyes the same as the eyes of this servant? Closed when we think they are opened?! Mercy!
Elisha knew that the God to whom he served had the power to get him out of this one, and that even if He chose not to, it was still okay; because the God he served, was the God who held the power over life and death.
Because the heart of Elisha rested assured in the promises of God, he was able to discern his situation with spiritual eyes, and not human eyes. Guess what? this God, the God of Elisha is the same today as He was yesterday, and He wants to be your God.
But wait! The story doesn’t end there, it only gets better! You can find out how it ends in 2 Kings chapter 6 go take a look!!! 😀
My prayer for both you and I today is that we may dare to step out and boldly request from God the kind of faith it takes to see with spiritual eyes.
Then, as Elisha’s servant did, we will really be able to see what is going on.
