I have been an introvert for as long as I can remember. Growing up in a church that encouraged participation from an early age, I learned to speak in public without showing any nervousness. However, even as a little kid, I couldn’t hush away that inner concern of not doing much to reach out to those outside my bubble to tell them about Jesus.
There is often this common misconception that if you’re not knocking on a stranger’s door or tapping on the shoulder of the person in front of you in the grocery store line to have a lovely Christian small talk, you are not sharing Jesus. But is that so?
Listen, if you are an introvert who’s lived all your life yearning to share Jesus with others but not knowing how, I’ve got great news for you!
Using what God gave you
If it’s true that sharing Jesus will usually require some getting outside of your comfort zone, it is also true that God gave you a specific set of gifts and talents to work with. Just as every organ of the body matters, so does every temperament and personality in the body of Christ. So, what are you waiting for to start using the introversion God gave you to share Him with others?
Today, I want to show you five ways in which you can share Jesus as an introvert:
Writing: Words are powerful, and if you are not much of a talker (like me) perhaps writing is your sweet spot. If there is something beautiful about the written word, it’s that, unlike the spoken word, the written word remains. Maybe start a blog? Or a newsletter?
Art: Maybe talking and writing are not your thing. Maybe you are the drawing, painting, or musical type. Sharing your visual or musical art through social media can also touch and lead others to Christ.
Acts of Kindness: If you are more of the action type, this one is for you. Jesus wasn’t all sermons and parables when He was on this earth. His ministry had a practical aspect to it. Your disinterested action could be the reason someone lets Jesus into their heart.
The Ministry of Friendship: As an introvert, you are probably not making new friends left and right every day. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be a good one. If there is one thing that characterized Jesus’ time on this earth, it is His ministry of friendship. Showing the love and compassion of Jesus to your friends through your interactions will not only be a blessing to them but an example that will have a ripple effect way beyond your immediate circles.
Being a good example: You would be surprised at the number of people who know who you are, watch you, and look up to you. According to 2 Corinthians 3: 2-3 we are open letters to the world. Your example is your best testimony.
Don’t let introversion stop you!
2 You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. 3 You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. –Corinthians 3:2-3
