Understanding our worth is one of the most important tasks in life. We could avoid so many problems just by truly understanding where our worth comes from.
Today’s relationship culture often tries to sell us a cheap version of worth, one that demands the other person take the initiative, serve us first, and constantly prove our value. But is that really what the Bible teaches? Where is the balance?
One of the biggest lies men and women can believe is that they must compete with one another for power or control to thrive. Yet nothing could be further from the truth.
The truth is that the enemy has sought to destroy humanity by attacking both men’s and women’s identities at their core. Most families nowadays are struggling with broken identities. Many marriages are made up of men and women who are out of touch with their masculinity and femininity, who have made it a habit of blaming each other for their issues, and who are constantly and inadvertently getting in the way of each other’s growth.
Being out of touch with our identity can certainly lead us to all the wrong places. Thankfully, the Bible provides a guide for healthy identity.
Proverbs 31
Proverbs is often seen as the go-to reference for what a biblically grounded Christian woman looks like. During my teen years, I must confess, I didn’t feel completely comfortable with it and at times even felt a little attacked. Over time, however, I have come to understand its value and how important a Proverbs 31 woman is to society as a whole.
Let’s talk about worth
Where does your worth come from? Have you ever asked yourself that question?
Does it come from your job? your romantic partner? your bank account? the food you eat, or the clothes you wear?
The type of woman described in Proverbs 31:10 is someone whose worth is greater than rubies, and there is only one source for that kind of worth: God.
Not knowing your worth will lead you to all the wrong places, but knowing it will set your path straight. Where is your worth grounded?
Her Husband Trusts in Her
A woman of high value is trustworthy. The type of woman described in Proverbs 31 is the kind of woman her husband can trust in. She is a woman of her word. She does not speak empty words or act without purpose. She’s is a woman of integrity.
Would those who know you describe you as a woman of integrity? Can your husband—or future husband—rely on you?- Proverbs 31:11
