Psalm 37:4 says: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart”.
Sounds like a clear path to happiness, doesn’t it? This Bible verse has always intrigued me. The glorified mindset promoted by the culture of selfishness in the media that I remember growing up of: “want to be truly happy? Then follow your heart!” though appealing, never felt right. Somewhere deep inside I knew there had to be more about happiness, hearts, and desires than meets the eye.
I wanted to have the desires of my heart met because, who doesn’t want their desires met, right? So, whenever I opened a Bible, I kept my eyes open just in case I found the answer to a question I had carried for years: What does it mean to delight yourself in the Lord? How do you do that? What does it look like? How do I know if I’m truly delighting myself in the Lord or not?
That’s when I found Isaiah 58:14
“Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.“
So, I quickly backed up to Isaiah 58:13, and things started to make sense. You can look this one up 😉 it’s the answer to the what and the how about delighting yourself in the Lord. Go look it up!
Okay, I’m going to spoil it a little bit for you, but you have to promise to look it up 😊 . The essence behind everything is obedience. The Ten Commandments God left for us are not a set of rules and prohibitions, but guidelines to a happy and healthy life! When we obey our Father, our minds and hearts sync in with His, and His desires become our desires! His will our will! His delight our delight!
Does that mean we have to obey God perfectly to gain His favor?
Don’t fret!
Because we have His favor, He enables us to lead an obedient life. It’s just a matter of accepting His favor into our lives. God never expects us to do anything on our own!
Isn’t that wonderful?
John 15:4-7 says:
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned, if you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
All we have to do is believe, accept, and hold on to Him ♥
