No Body Lives Forever!

How would you react if someone told you this: “No body lives forever… but now, you can… that’s right, immortality is now attainable”? Hundreds of onlookers were captivated by one very particular booth at The International Consumer Electronics Show held at Las Vegas this past week. With an almost spine chilling professional demeanor and dressed in white attire, the tour guides walked their visitors through a “spare body store”.

The eerie tour was completed by a sales pitch in which a guide would compare the purchase of a new body to the purchase of a luxury car, a car in which you can ride the immortality ride. You can now “choose a new sleeve for your soul, be who you want to be, be immortal” is the philosophy of the upcoming online show that was branded at The International Consumer Electronics Show this past week at Las Vegas and will premiere sometime next month.

Immortality is something that humanity has been dreaming of almost since the beginning of age. To be more specific, since Genesis 3:22, 23. Take a look 😉

The reason why immortality is so appealing to us is because human beings were not designed to die. But let me tell you something, we were not designed to live in sin either, let alone live in sin forever. Living in sin is being dead without dying. Living in sin is chaotic, hurtful, and degrading.

The youth, especially, has been recently bombarded by this mentality. A desire for immortality has been awakened in the hearts of young people. From vampires, to zombies, to soul continuity, to well, now the fantasy of transferring our consciousness into bodies to live forever; a rather erroneous idea of immortality has been pushed into the minds of our generation.

But, have you noticed that with neither of these options do you get the chance to retain who you are plus an “upgrade”? These things are but a cheap degraded distortion of what God has in store for you and for me.

So, what does the Bible say about immortality, life, and death?

immortality life death

Since the very moment sin entered this world, we live in a context of death Romans 6:23, Genesis 3:19. We have been dying from the instant we are conceived. Even though to this day we are facing the consequences of disobedience, you must keep in mind that you and I were not left to face the consequences of sin on our own. God Himself, took our place at the cross and died for every sin humanity bears on its shoulders.  And because of that, we now have the opportunity of eternal life. John 3:16

What happens when we die?

death

To understand this, we must understand that human beings don’t have souls, human beings are souls. When God created Adam, he formed him out the dust of the ground and then breathed into his nose the breath of life, making of him a living soul. – Genesis 2:7. So, Dust (body) + Breath of life = soul.

According to the Bible, being dead is like being asleep.  John 11:11-14, 1 Thessalonians 4:15

When we die the body returns to the dust, and the breath of life returns to God.  We are not conscious, not aware, we know nothing, we stop being. – Ecclesiastes 9:5

So, does that mean that… Y.O.L.O?

YOLO

Hold it there. Watch out for that philosophy too, because according to the Bible you don’t only live once.  Not only do our everyday choices have a ripple effect on our earthly life, but on our eternal life as well.

“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”

-Deuteronomy 30:19

Okay, I live a Godly life, then I die. What next?

Life GodlyBecause Christ chose to die on the cross in our behalf, you and I get to choose between eternal life or eternal death.  When you die in Christ, your name is sealed in the book of life. (Revelation 3:5) and you can rest assure that next time you open your eyes, it will be to meet your Savior.

“In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory, ‘Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’”

-1 Corinthians 15:52-55

And there is the even better news!

“After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.”

1 Thessalonians 4:17

Human beings were created to live forever. However, immortality isn’t inherent to humans. When connected to Jesus -the fountain of life-, immortality is a gift. However, out of a Godly context immortality is an unrealistic curse.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes  in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

-John 3:16

Jesus gave up His life on the cross so that you and I could have eternal life.
