When God asks you to kill a dream

Imagine waiting 25 years for a dream to come true. Now imagine, that after you receive what you’ve been waiting for, you get asked to let it go. How would that make you feel? I know I would feel incredibly disappointed, sad, angry, frustrated, and confused!

A story from the Old Testament that has always blown my mind is the story of Abraham and Isaac. Abraham and his wife waited for 25 years for the promise of a son to come true. Then, one day, God tells Abraham: “Give me your child in sacrifice.”

Was God really asking for a sacrifice like that?

Even though He didn’t understand, Abraham decided to be obedient. To give up the one thing he had been waiting for.

So, when Abraham and Isaac reached the mountain, Abraham placed Isaac over the altar. As he was about to hurt the child, an angel stopped him.

God provided a ram for the sacrifice and told him to spare the life of his child. Because what God was looking for wasn’t Isaac’s life, but Abraham’s heart. He wanted to know that Abraham would be obedient even if it meant letting go of something he loved so dearly.

” By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son,  even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.”

Hebrews 11:17-19

Sometimes, God lets us wait on a dream; sometimes He asks us to let go of it.

Whatever circumstance you may find yourself in, remember that dreams are meant to drive us closer to God.  When a dream makes you hold on stronger to the Dream maker than the dream itself, it has fulfilled its purpose. Keeping this in mind will spare you many heartaches.

Like Abraham, we can choose to exercise our faith in the God of dreams. To rest in His will, enjoy every day and circumstance as it shows, and face life with optimism and a deep sense of security, knowing that the God of dreams knows and cares about every one of our needs and wants.
